Eddie was at Rye House today for a mid week test. Although getting some useful laps in, it was largely a fun outing and the main focus of the day was on the other person he turned up with… his mum!
“My mum decided that she wanted to drive a racing car for her birthday so I suggested that she had a crack on a kart before jumping straight in a car. She would get more than a good idea about what to expect and it would cost considerably less.
“I think it’s great and I really hoped she would enjoy it and want to do it again. It’s been 11 or 12 years since my mum last saw me race and that was just in a piddly little indoor kart, so I think she might have a bit of a shock when she sees how fast these things go.”
Although not getting anywhere close to racing speed, Eddie’s mum nevertheless drove sensibly and put in some good laps without making any mistakes. Something that Eddie didn’t...
“My mum did a better job than I did. I stacked it on my first flying lap! There was a puddle at the exit of Stadium corner and I wanted to see how deep it was so I drove straight through it and ended up backwards into the wall! Woops!”
Eddie’s mum enjoyed her first experience of karting, describing it as “exciting” and “exhilarating”, although she says that she now has to think about whether or not she actually wants to drive a racing car.”
Eddie was also happy with the test as it gave him some much needed track time before the last race of the season there in November.
“I want to say a big thanks to Club100, particularly James the mechanic, who briefed my mum before she went out and followed her for the entire test in the pusher kart to make sure she was OK.”
