A new strategy for round 5 at Lydd gave Eddie his best result of the season so far with a solid 9th place in the B final. Eddie came to Lydd with a new philosophy of not worrying about setting targets and trying to make A finals, but just enjoy his day.
This change of mood came after what Eddie described as the worst race of his life last month at Clay Pigeon. Eddie said in an interview that he thinks his poor performances have been more down to him putting too much pressure on himself.
For the fourth time in five races this year, Eddie was only a handful of points off qualifying straight into the A final. A spin in his second heat after leading hampered that. A strong 5th place from 12th on the grid in heat 1 and a 6th from 15th on the grid in heat 3 put Eddie half way down the B final.
It was a day that saw all of the top drivers have their moments, with Paul Lloyd spinning right in front of Eddie at the last corner in heat one, and the top three, Mark Craddock, Luigi Mazza and reigning champion Trevor Randall all having major offs.
Eddie said of his day "I enjoyed it. I had two really good heats where I came up strongly through the field. I had a ragged second heat after I took the lead at the start, but I don't feel bad about it because the best of them did it today. Although it wasn't my strongest race performance, I'm not totally dispondant. I still have the belief that I will get there eventually."
Eddie's upbeat attitude was echoed by his father after the race. "We just came to have fun today and tried not to think of A finals. I think this was a good strategy because he looked more relaxed. I think he drove really well all day. He had a bad second heat, but apart from that drove almost faultlessly."
For fan club members, the full race report will be published tomorrow.
